A passion for natural fabrics, texture, colour and a love of hand-crafted artisanal products is the vision and drive behind everything that happens at Popinjay Studio. We believe in a process that keeps in touch with handmade. We emphasise the unique voice that comes from the makers process, the heart and soul that is an inevitable part of our heritage – the instinct and urge to create and to beautify.
Growing up on a farm and close to nature creates a deep connection to the natural landscape and singular beauty that nature provides. My making, creating, crafting journey has been formed and influenced by being surrounded by a creative solution to every problem, respectfully restoring an antique cabinet, creating row upon row of bright apricot or sultry strawberry jams, gleaming in the pantry, exquisite knitting, practical sewing, fine leatherwork, detailed embroidered labours of love, painted ceramics, an exquisite rose garden. The culture of making in all its glorious forms leaves an indelible mark in your DNA and is part and parcel of our humanity. Having touched on many different forms of arts, I have found my present artistic voice in the screen printing and designing process. With a background in horticulture and genetics it was inevitable that much of the design is strongly rooted in botanical themes and inspirations with much interest in the chemical and alchemical processes.
Situated on the Zululand coast of South Africa, summers are hot and sub-tropical, and winters are beautifully balmy. The studio overlooks a leafy garden with constant companions, a door that is always open and of course a brewing pot of coffee. Along with my team, we create bespoke items with great attention to detail in small runs, all forming part of Popinjay Studios personal hallmark.
